Heat manipulated tin foil
This project entailed using any mundane material and transforming it into something totally unrecognisable from its original form. In my case, it was tin foil. I trialled many different ways to alter the state of the foil and found that I achieved an intriguing effect when I lightly brushed a hot flame over it - this caused the metal to contract in on itself, creating a fluidity and rippled aesthetic that was reminiscent of fabric - a quality that is opposing to metal’s normal rigid qualities. To further alter the state of the foil I chose to spray paint it blue; after doing this a realised that I had created a material that looked like plastic but behaved like metal. And so, I made an off-licence bag out of tin foil.
However, I wanted to explore the altered qualities of the foil more, so I continued by creating a collection of bangles made solely out of tin foil. I found that applying differing amounts of pressure to the foil prior to applying the heat caused very drastic variations in how they reacted to the heat.
